"Kulma was the second album from Finnish arch-experimentalists Pan Sonic (previously Panasonic, the 'a' dropped for obvious reasons) and showed a marked movement away from the intense barrage of noise of the first album Vaiko. Instead we are treated to a peerless connection of analogue techno stormers, probably closest to Aphex Twin's milestone Analogue Bubblebath releases than anything else on the scene. If you haven't managed to get hold of any Pan Sonic before - this is an ideal place to start as this album has it all; Glitchy restless beats, disturbing drones, sub atomic bass tones and the all-important overdriven distortion. From beginning to end Kulma showcases Pan Sonic at their absolute best, the album's opener 'Teurastamo' is a barrage of machinegun beats and beautifully grimy sounds (try mixing this with some heavy dubstep... trust me it works!), 'Murto Neste' takes a disturbing plucked synth line and syncopates it along with a marching bass roll to wobble the most wisely built of houses and closer 'Moottori' has the heaviest drum beat this side of tribal Africa. Electronic at its most intense, Kulma is a classic and hugely influential album - you know what to do!
