"Andrew Lagowski ist nah dran, das 30-jährige Jubiläum seiner Musikerkarriere feiern zu können. 1982 begann er, Musik zu machen, fünf Jahre später veröffentlichte er seine erste Maxi. Seit langer Zeit betreibt er schon drei Soloprojekte parallel: Legion, Lagowski und S.E.T.I. Hinzu kommen andere Projekte mit Stephen Jarvis von Terraform (Nagamatzu) oder Lustmord (Terror Against Terror). Andrew Lagowski konzentriert sich auf computergenerierte Musik und futuristisch anmutende Themen. Genau genommen könnte man ihn als Science-Fiction-Musiker bezeichnen.
Mit S.E.T.I. geht er der Frage nach extraterrestrischem Leben nach. Der Name dürfte vom gleichnamigen Projekt der UC Berkeley bekannt sein, dass in bestimmten Frequenzbändern nach Spuren außerirdischer Kommunikation sucht. Lagowski veröffentlicht mit "Corona" sein fünftes S.E.T.I.-Album, das summa summarum sehr eingängig und augenscheinlich nicht so kompliziert wie seine Vorgänger erschallt. Nach dem ersten Track "Senior Crown" der noch sehr mechanisch klingt, werden die Songs immer atmosphärischer, gleich einer Reise von der Erde weg in die Tiefen des Alls.
Langsam auf und ab wallende Melodien, immer wieder mechanische Geräusche sowie Aufnahmen der NASA und aus dem Radio katapultieren den Hörer Lichtjahre in den Weltraum. Einen selbstkritischen und, wenn man so will, ironischen Einblick liefert der Track "Kepler", in dem man eine Erklärung dafür erhält, warum das S.E.T.I.-Programm eigentlich nicht funktionieren kann. Andrew Lagowski öffnet uns trotzdem mit "Corona" die Augen für die unbegreifliche Schönheit, die dort draußen auf uns wartet, aber momentan für uns unerreichbar ist. "Over the years I lost track of Andrew Lagowski, sometimes (such as here) known as S.E.T.I. I have no idea why I lost track, but perhaps he was busy playing concerts, or just not as active with releasing music. I learn that 'Knowledge' from 1994 was his first album (and perhaps I should add 'a classic') and 'Corona' is only his fifth album as S.E.T.I. until now. Space is still the place here. S.E.T.I.'s music is based on the cosmos, space, stars, and everything else connected to that. It takes a look at that vast empty space from within, but also from a distance. Lagowski uses recordings from Nasa which he cuts into his heavy drone based music. The novelty of that is long gone - 'Knowledge' is a classic - as it is done by him and by others after him. That is perhaps, after sixteen years the downside of this music. Its all a matter of heard and seen it all. But with so few S.E.T.I. releases out there, we may not mind about that little progress that has been made. The music here is
excellent. On a grey winter day with darkness starting half way through the afternoon, this is just the perfect ambient soundtrack for the cold season. Highly atmospheric, no rhythm in sight, just slow evolving patterns played on a bunch of analogue synthesizers, sound effects and some radio transmissions.
